Hexocaust - S/T (2024) [Belarus]

I think this might just be the first band I’ve ever heard from Belarus.

There are more. Not a lot more, but there are a few good ones I've found. Which is strange because right next door in Ukraine and Poland they seem to have a lot of high profile black metal bands. Maybe dudes from Minsk head to Poland or Ukraine to form and join bands because they have bigger scenes there? I knew a dude from Minsk once. Most people just assumed he was Russian because he spoke Russian and worked in a Russian restaurant, but he was a Belarussian from Minsk.

Check some of these guys out Blivvie, I think you're gonna want all or most of these albums:

Khragkh - Ersatz, Belarus 2016

Ciemra - The Tread of Darkness, Belarus 2023

Pa Vesh En - Pyrefication, Belarus 2019, these guys have several good albums if you're into their murky cavernous style.

And who could forget these guys...

Cryptospital - Scythe of the Black Death, Belarus 2021, an atmospheric black metal masterpiece

NP: Avatar - Emperors of the Night

Pretty decent. I was expecting a bit more of a hybrid between black and death. This is pretty much completely grown from the black metal vine. The production, while suitably loud, is probably a learning project from somebody (either in the band or not) who hasn't quite mastered the use of his recording tools. It's not terrible by any means, but the keyboards do jut from the body of thing a little too noticeably, and the vocals feel kind of isolated. Probably a learning project from somebody younger. The music is a little rough when taking each element individually, but works well enough as a whole package.

This is more what I was in the mood for today. The straightforward nature of this kind of thing sans all the bells and whistles works well enough. I did notice a few moments, primarily when the go in dual harmonized trills and little accents on the guitar work, where they tend to more easily fit into the mold of ATG's Slaughter of the Soul type things. Thankfully a lack of breakdowns and a healthy dose of stomping older school death metal saves these from invoking American metalcore circa 2005 through 2015, that most of us have had enough of. Using shorter leads on top of the mix makes for some transitions that feel almost too smooth at times, as the most intriguing parts for me are when they juxtapose their less immediately digestible riffs against some of the harmonic stuff. Still worth a listen in my book though.

Anakreb - Fuir des Hommes (2024) [France]

yeah, this is pretty solid, then again I shouldn’t be surprised. French black metal seldom disappoints.

Berstup - Shadows Over Uncharted Paths EP (2024) [Poland]

initial impressions were that this is some promising black metal, think I need more time with it though

Devouring Void - Across the Endless Nothingness (2024) [Canada]

another one I need a bit more time with, feel like they sit on some of the riffs too long but otherwise decent

Sinking my teeth into my Ulcerate/Cutting the Throat of God disc. Post punk, gothy riffs with their aggro dissonance. High on the atmosphere. I'm getting a yin/yang, masculine/feminine vibe....like a hulking front man, Henry Rollins in his prime or maybe the frontdude for the Cro-Mags screaming into the void while a beautiful ballerina dances blithely around like Tinkerbelle. Look, I like this, but it's basically a disso-death post metal album. Nothing wrong with that in my book. I'm an atmo guy. give me the dynamics, hit me with heavy musicality, hit me with a variety of influences which is my one beef with that Coffins albums y'all are in love with.. repetitive. Give me something to sink my teeth into. This works for me.

Braandholt - Einder (2024) [The Netherlands]

another pretty decent black metal discovery, damn the Netherlands really does have everything legalised weed, nice cities, and black metal…

Brüka - Death’s Promise (2024) [USA]
Liking this one quite a bit, more on the menacing side of black metal

Marrow of Man - Ancient Hymns of Apocalypse (2024) [The Netherlands]

supposedly this is Black/Thrash, sounds pretty pure black metal to me done pretty well though all things considered

That's the 30 year anniversary re-release of their 1994 demo tape with updated full color artwork. And yes they are indeed a symphonic black metal band, no death metal in sight. Their first actual full length release two years later in 1996 sounds quite a bit more professional, although obviously symphonic anything is not my bag so I'm gonna have to turn this off once I grab the URL.

Avatar - ...Memoriam Draconis, Belgium 1996

Now if you want some good shit from 1994...

Graveland - The Celtic Winter, Poland 1994

Mütiilation - Hail Satanas We Are the Black Legions, France 1994

Moon Reaper - Black Sun Sorcery (2024) [UK]
I came across this earlier in the year and it didn’t really click with me at the time, revisiting a few months later it’s growing on me. I don’t exactly know what to call it this elements of black metal, doom, and hard-core that all come through and various points.

Blackened Doom Metal? This seems like my cup of tea 🤩

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
