Kingdom of Sorrow - "Behind the Blackest Tears"

This second album has more of a Crowbar feel to it, as opposed to the Hatebreed feel the first album had.  Which makes sense, considering the band was the partnership between Kirk Windstein and Jamey Jasta.  Not a huge fan of the first album, but this one hits the mark very well!

I recently seen a video where they performed Raining Blood that was a decent cover

I think I remember Ice T once saying they try to do a cover per album to pay respects their heroes, (or something like that). They did a cover of Hey Joe, but it wasn't as good as their cover of Suicidal Tendencies.

Yeah I never had the chance back then, so I'll take whatever I can get. They're old, but fuck they sound great. Tomorrow I think we'll get some other goodies like Fight Fire with Fire, Ride the Lightning, Battery... I'd spooge my pants for Phantom Lord, Escape, or Trapped Under Ice, but those aren't very likely.

Tomorrow's openers are Ice Nine Kills which I've never heard of and Five Flavored Fruit Punch which I have heard of but never heard. Not getting my hopes up for either. Time for hitting the bar and merch table.

Tonight is an unrelated show: Green Day, Rancid, and Smashing Pumpkins. Wouldn't mind seeing Rancid but the cheapest Tix we can find would cost us $700. Pass. Think we'll just get shitty drunk and find some good chow.

Crazy thing to me so far is the insufferable amount of poseurs out for the show. I mean I get a ton of people didn't get into Metallica until the black album, but they bust out with Hit The Lights and you're not even bobbing your head... GTFO. I mean even my Midwestern mom looking non metal head wife was ready to wreck shit when they started playing that. C'mon man, it's a fuckin metal show.

Metallica played most of them at the Concert Hall TO ( Masonic Temple ) in 85, my friend still has his ticket stub, Geddy Lee was at the gig to everyones surprise. Seen Slayer, Venom, Exciter, Razor and others at the same venue between 85-85, think they opened with Fight Fire with Fire encores were Creeping Death, Am I Evil and Motorbreath, good times wish I had a fuckin time machine 🤘

Probably would have needed to change my skivvies had I heard Fight Fire with Fire or seen Geddy in person up close. Alas, we got neither tonight. But the setlist was decent. And I did get Battery. Had to wreck some shit for a few minutes.

The Ecstasy of Gold
Whiplash
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Ride the Lightning
Until It Sleeps
Lux Æterna
Screaming Suicide
(followed by Kirk & Rob doodle: Sonny Curtis’s “Love is All Around” and Ozzy's “Over the Mountain”)
The Day That Never Comes
Wherever I May Roam
The Call of Ktulu
(Dedicated to Cliff Burton)
The Unforgiven
Inamorata
Battery
Moth Into Flame
One
Enter Sandman

Awesome, yeah they opened with Morricone's TEOG in 85 before kicking in with Fight Fire with Fire come to think it, was loud as fuckin hell, not like Motorhead at the Danforth Theatre though, that was fuckin insane, plaster fell from the ceiling and they closed it for reno for a few weeks after, my guitar teacher said his ears were ringing for more than a day and it worked out well because he didn't have to hear his mother ranting, we used to practice in his basement 😅🤣

Dead Congregation - Graves Of The Archangels

It's been 10 years since Promulgation, possibly my favorite death metal album of that last decade. Could you ask your buddy Tasso (just if you happen to bump into him at a cafe or one of the loyal gyro joints or something) what the holdup is with getting the next album out? I get that they tour around the world and probably have jobs 'n shit, but it's been a decade now, surely they could have found a few spare minutes to write and record a few new tunes? Efcharistó fíle.

Totenwache - Kriegswesen, Germany 2020. It's been 4 years, it's about time for a new one already dudes.

Flammae - Hellfire, Poland. Alright let's see how this stacks up against last year's stellar debut. That's gonna be a hard one to top.

Departure Chandelier - Satan Soldier of Fortune, Montréal/NY. Their first album came out in 2019 but was actually recorded way back in 2010. Finally we have a follow-up. Sounds a bit different, especially how the vocals are presented, but it's good, it doesn't suck at all. Even the keyboards are used for good effect. I'll have to back to back it with the first album now and compare Departures. But I really like this. Probably not recommended ffo Manowar or Running Wild.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
