Venue Food Vendors

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't eat at a concert venue where it was only a few hours, but aren't all Download Festivals at least full day events if not multi day events? I've worked plenty of all day events where the food is fine, usually over priced, but fine.

I would reckon there is just as much chance of copping a dose of the shits from a restaurant as there is from a music venue.

i think it all depends on the temperature the food is stored at, really surprised it was the beef, it is one of the most temp stable foods I suspect it is in the gravy. There was incident in Toronto at the CNE where they introduced a new item called the Cronut it was the filling that killed the unfortunate souls that ate it. As for a festival I would rather just fast as I intermittent fast daily pretty much OMAD, I take in my calories in one of 2 meals and I don't snack or eat junk food of any kind. I would rather bring a box of temp stable protein bars and other than water I am good. When I hike with my son 10 to 20 k we never bring food for the day, just protein bars, electrolytes and water, I feel much better when my stomach is empty anyways

There is no doubt that some public event places have questionable food handling techniques. There has been plenty of food trucks etc that I have avoided over the years purely because of their appearance. But these days even I'm a whimp when it comes to some of these things. Still, accidents happen, even in restaurants, and it's not like all food vendors everywhere are an issue.

We used to do farmers expos and trade events that would happen over 4 or 5 days. In the 80's and 90's we did music festivals that lasted for 2 and 3 days. Eating from the food trucks was just part of the event. We used to do the Hells Angels and the Commancheros end of year Christmas parties. You don't take food in and you don't ask where food is coming from, if others are eating it you eat it when your hungry. Eating out of modern food trucks is not a concern after seeing some of the meals at those events.

Never really understood this eating repeatedly throughout the day thing. I have coffee with maybe a blueberry muffin or something to nibble on generally somewhere between like 1pm and 3pm, then dinner typically around 8 or 9pm and that's it. Just water the rest of the time. Just past midnight currently here and I never even got around to having my dinner at all tonight, just the 2pm coffee. Did feed the boy a turkey sandwich on rye around 7pm (that's what he asked for) but I wasn't hungry yet then so I didn't eat with him, I just went back upstairs. Then somehow I never got around to eating. Should probably go down and find a little something to nibble on. But it's 12:15am I'm not gonna start cooking a big meal now.

I've done that many times, I just go to bed hungry and have a big breakfast when I get up or drink a protein shake to maintain my caloric intake before I sleep without wrecking havoc on my intestinal system trying to digest food all night. It is never a bad thing to skip a meal the average human only needs 2,000 calories a day for women, 2,500 for us dudes. I try to keep mine around 2,000 in the spring and summer to make up for 10-15 pounds I gain during the fall-winter. Been on this planet for over half a century and have never seen so many people in self induced poor health, it is astonishing really and fuckin sad.

That's part of why I only eat the one big meal. I don't count or keep track of them, but I figure it'd be hard to go over the 2,500 calories with just one meal and a coffee. The other reason is I'm just not hungry in the mornings. After so many years of not eating in the mornings it wouldn't even occur to me to eat anything before 1 or 2pm at the earliest. Some days it's 3 or 4. Hunger is mostly psychological. If your body knows there won't be any food coming for many more hours it won't even bother sending you hunger signals. But if you eat around the same time every day your body knows that too, and will start telling you you're hungry right on cue. But I'm a stubborn bastard, I refuse to be a slave to hunger pangs, I'll eat when I'm good and ready to.

Too many people eat just out of habit or because they are bored, even worst eat fast food instead of skipping the meal, they don't realize you are much better drinking water, the hunger will go away and you won't be poisoning your body

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
