I've been trying to do some ear training on a free website, but I suck at it, and now I feel like an insensate dult.

What kind of ear training? I'm thankful that I learned/was taught how to recognize intervals as a teenager, but it took a bunch of work, and I'm convinced that perfect pitch lies beyond my reach.

I'm doing a bit of work on intervals at the moment, it's coming back reasonably quickly confirming that sub-consciously a lot of this stuff is still there.

Also 'Paint It Black' is temporarily on the back burner because I need to refresh the theory stuff before I can finish this bridging solo.

The site is called Ear Beater (a wicked dumb name in my opinion) and it's basic, with intervals, cords, scales. It is free. Tonality is a very weak spot in my musicality, and this is helping, but I would not have imagined that it would be hard for me to desern weather an arpeggiated cord was Major or minor for example, that proves tricky for me. Same with major vs minor pentatonic scales, so fuck.... but I'm thoroughly enjoying the process of learning music, make no mistake music, cuz' I'm coming after you.

Neat, I'll check it out. And, you know, thirds are so subjective anyway... :D

It is pretty cold. I used to like winter, and then enough years working outside and trudging through grey slush made me kind of hate it. Now I might be starting to like it again. I know I already mentioned something about long underwear, but I'll go ahead and plug it again, it's really helped to make life worth living lately.

Yeah, shoveling and plowing is a bitch, but it's worse when the wheeler is broken (oil drain plug stripped out) my legs don't get cold too much, i got lined pants and they are pretty sweet, but i need a new coat and boots, my soles are fucked.

Yeah in my elementary years I used to be ecstatic when i saw it snowing, now its the fuckin apocalypse... but even then we need snow to bank up the sides of the house for extra insulation (we live in a shitty modular home)

We don't live in a trailer park though, we have 10 acres all to ourselfs with an empty lot (empty as in no house, but lotsa trees) and neighbors next door on the other side, with trees separating us, and thousands of acres of swamp behind us.

I lived in St. Peter near Mankado for three years in the early 80's. The town was down in a valley, but I'll tell you what, up on the plains where I seldom went it was hella cold and windy.

Hell yeah, though, land is great. My brother and his wife are in a modular home from the 70s (well, ok, let's admit that it's a double-wide), but they're on her family's land and they can do whatever they want. I've been an unrepentant city dweller for the past 20 years, but I'm getting a bit tired of being all up in everybody's shit all the time. I suppose it would help if my middle aged Cambodian neighbors across the street didn't have a fondness for drunk midnight karaoke. I'm working on my design for a flaming feces launcher.

You guys are fucking awesome! XD Yeah I've been to St Peter before in the summer, hell of a fucking drive from Milaca. Er... maybe that was when we lived in Becker... still though, long ass haul. The folks that are coming over for new years that I told you about live in uhh... think it was Brooklyn Park and one of the girls' friends lives in South St Paul, it really sucks to be so far away from friends man. But you could not pay me enough to live down there. Fuck. That. Shit. Jack.... Sparrow. (Parents are watching Pirates :3) Ah, and flaming shit launcher, just do what I did, get a big valve like they have on semi-truck diesel tanks, get a small cylindrical air compressor tank and attach a schrader valve to it so you can pump it up with a big compressor, then on the other end weld a threaded pipe to it, and stick the valve on, then an adapter for a long piece of PVC or ABS, and voila. Shit launcher! Don't know about the flaming part though, you'll have to use your imagination for that one. Thing works fucking tits though, we launched a shitload of capacitors at least 100 yards with 120 PSI in the tank, now imagine if I had a bigger tank.... muhahahaha!

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
