But I thought he beat the cancer?

I'm going to start listening to that album multiple times a week, so you can use that response nearly every day.

Love those guys!  I saw them live with Flogging Molly back in the summer of 2018, and they were fantastic.  I got a photo with one of the Murphys' singers, Ken Casey.  I'll treasure it forever.

Yeah I'm a big fan of them too.

You can laugh farmer Joe, but for a split second there when I first saw your post I was ready to Google if maybe Dave had finally bit the big one. He is after all nearly as old as I am. Even if he has beat the cancer for good, Megastaine has made a lot of enemies over the years. And you know how it is mate, we're all armed bloodthirsty savages with itchy trigger fingers over here.

You said the same thing last time I posted it, but if MegaDave did die then such an announcement wouldn't be in the listening to thread it would be in a thread of general chatter, or the passed away thread.

No one lives forever Vic. Not even filthy rich rockstars. Plenty of rock and metal dudes much younger than Dave and I have carked it in recent years. When I click the "activity" tab to see recent posts, I don't necessarily notice right away which thread something might have been posted in. I see "MegaDave RIP" my very first thought is always gonna be "Dave's lifestyle must've finally caught up with him." A second or two later I'll remember "Oh yeah, he had that album Rust in Peace 30-something years ago." Sorry if that album isn't in the forefront of my mind at all times. FFS even back in the day when I listened to Megastaine's records on the regular, I was always more of a Peace Sells guy. I even liked Symphony better than RIP. Nowadays I'd gladly trade in all my old MegaDave vinys for a nice quad-shot flat white.

I'm not sure anyone wants MegaDave to last forever, except maybe for the entertainment value of his comments.

However I still maintain, and you can ride this one to the grave if it suits you, that as a do gooder and general all round forum rule obeyer I certainly wouldn't post an RIP message in the listening to thread. The wrath of the mods scares me too much.

I actually left whatever beat-up vinyl I still had left at my friend Bob's house out in Colorado back in 2018 when I moved back east. Figured there wasn't any point in schlepping them all back and forth around the country if I wasn't even planning to actually spin any of them ever again. The way we left things I still technically "own" them, he's just "taking care of them" for me. But there's nothing any newer than maybe '92 or '93 in there, so the chances of me ever wanting them back are roughly zero. Anything I'd still have any interest in listening to from 40 years ago I now have digitally. Bobby plays them though, texts me pictures of the covers sometimes while he's spinning them. If I had been living down there in Pensacola back in 2018 I'd have gladly donated them all to Casa de Navy, but such is life.

Hellgate Necrosodomy - The Annihilation Deliverance, Finland. One of my favorite albums of this current year. I'll call it groovy meat & potatoes black/death.

They like to wield that ban hammer. Take it out, shine it up, and flash it around to keep us all in line. But they don't actually seem to use it all that much. I think by now I've figured out which rules they really draw the line at, so I think I'll take my chances.

And honestly, who looks at which thread they're on all the time? I keep this tab open all the time so it's rare that I'll bother to scroll all the way up just to check. I tend to assume I'm on the WAYLT thread most of the time anyway, even when it turns out I'm not.

It's all a ruse on my behalf. I convince the mods I'm scared of their ban hammer. I be nice, occasionally pushing the line, but not to often. They think I'm a nice person. Then the day I step over the line they are wowed by how nice I am and think that such a mistake was out of character and not worth reprimanding.  I'm sure they'll fall for it.

I look at the thread title, then I know what make my BS related too. There is some threads I just can't spin enough BS to be a part of, whereas there are other threads where my BS is (un)convincing enough to allow me a pass.

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
