Hi everyone

Lets see introudicng myself, I run the Centipede Abyss label (fairly new started in Nov 2022). The label focuses on what could be considered fringe metal acts and limited edition physicals with a focus on affordability when it comes to prices
(the label Bc link should be on the singature)

Aside from that i enjoy learning languages, painting, hiking, photography, painting and car engineering

Welcome. It's so refreshing to see an actual metalhead join up to our little forum. We get so many younger folks that sign up but then it turns out they listen to nu-metal and mallcore and metalcore and some of these new hybrid Zoomer bands I don't even know what the fuck they're supposed to be, so then I have nothing to talk with them about.

On the other hand, apparently you're into the more avant-garde and experimental (weird) end of the extreme metal spectrum, so I might not have much to converse with you about either. But at least I can respect you. Good luck with the label launch.

Im a big fan of OSDM, Death Metal, Balck metal, DeathDoom and funeral doom too, though I do have a particular fancy for the weirder stuff.

I mean Ive got stuff like Nuclear Death, Emperor, Blasphemy, Ahab, My Dying Bride, Cancelled Earth, Bongripper and more in regular rotation... was actually lsitenign to the new VoidCeremony and the new Dead and Dripping earlier. Theres plenty to converse about.
Am also a huge King diamond fan.... *that includes the MF stuff - all of it

And ty Thatguy, though "LSL" is prob the most relaxing of all the artists

Yeah baby. I just had a listen to some of the 'Lux Sine Lumine' release. This is good stuff, but a word to the GG -  you won't like it.

Of course not. Because I, GG, don't like anything. Somehow I manage to find 300 albums to buy every year across several different sub-genres but yet I hate everything.

"Writhing sounds burrow through the infinite necropolis, charnel stars flicker their pale tentacles in these nameless spaces; vexatious spirals of monstrous cradles seep into the numerous graves, and there, beyond time, where the inconceivable oscillate... is the the place where... there is light without light"

Ok that's cool man, but where's the riffs? How can you have "metal" without riffs? I see he wants $2.79 US for this which is more than reasonable. But if I were to pay an extra charge could I maybe get riffs with mine?

The Vertebrae Fetish Totem one "Cult" with the golden skulls art is kind of interesting though. That one has guitars and drums and riffs and vocals and everything.

You listen to tons of music so of course there will be things you don't like. No one is accusing you of being narrow minded! However, am I right about this?

The art is all great.

C'mon Doc, out of everyone here I'd expect a fellow dry humoured old bastard who enjoys pushing buttons and being a dick sometimes like you should know better than anyone not to take me so literally. (you saw I even threw the extra u in humored for you as a show of respect?) I know you weren't accusing me. But I am narrow minded and you know it.

Yes of course you were right!! There were no riffs!! And whataya mean he got me? Obviously there were guitars, they just weren't using them to play actual riffs, they were just making weird & cool noises with them. Which I reckon was probably a lot more fun for them doing it than it was for me listening to it. I know some people really do dig that kind of thing. And you know I'm not one of them.

But honestly, I'm not here to shit on the new guy's label venture, I sincerely wish him luck with that. I'm pretty sure Doc is gonna part with the $11 (or whatever it comes to down under) and spring for the whole label discography.

Relentless Oblivion, you'd be quite partial to the majority of the acts then.
and thank you doc (easier than saying Thatguy)

actually mastering a project here that has Lori (Nuclear Death) on vocals for an avantgarde garde deathgrind project to send off to the printers today/tomorrow
and the guys from Arlyxkqwr are submitting new material too this month for summer release

GG, there will be more VFT on the label but for the msot part its going to be the weirder stuff; I think ive found the niche Id like to occupy.
And I didnt see it as you shitting on anything

    • Whichever tier of thrash metal you consigned Sacred Reich back in the 80's/90's they still had their moments.  "Ignorance" & "Surf Nicaragura" did a great job of establishing the band, whereas "The American Way" just got a little to comfortable and accessible (the title track grates nowadays) for my ears.  A couple more records better left forgotten about and then nothing for twenty three years.  2019 alone has now seen three releases from Phil Rind and co.  A live EP, a split EP with Iron Reagan and now a full length.

Notable addition to the ranks for the current throng of releases is former Machine Head sticksman, Dave McClean.  Love or hate Machine Head, McClean is a more than capable drummer and his presence here is felt from the off with the opening and title track kicking things off with some real gusto.  'Divide & Conquer' and 'Salvation' muddle along nicely, never quite reaching any quality that would make my balls tingle but comfortable enough.  The looming build to 'Manifest Reality' delivers a real punch when the song starts proper.  Frenzied riffs and drums with shots of lead work to hold the interest.

There's a problem already though (I know, I am such a fucking mood hoover).  I don't like Phil's vocals.  I never had if I am being honest.  The aggression to them seems a little forced even when they are at their best on tracks like 'Manifest Reality'.  When he tries to sing it just feels weak though ('Salvation') and tracks lose real punch.  Give him a riffy number such as 'Killing Machine' and he is fine with the Reich engine (probably a poor choice of phrase) up in sixth gear.  For every thrashy riff there's a fair share of rock edged, local bar act rhythm aplenty too.

Let's not poo-poo proceedings though, because overall I actually enjoy "Awakening".  It is stacked full of catchy riffs that are sticky on the old ears.  Whilst not as raw as perhaps the - brilliant - artwork suggests with its black and white, tattoo flash sheet style design it is enjoyable enough.  Yes, 'Death Valley' & 'Something to Believe' have no place here, saved only by Arnett and Radziwill's lead work but 'Revolution' is a fucking 80's thrash heyday throwback to the extent that if you turn the TV on during it you might catch a new episode of Cheers!

    • Full length number 19 from overkill certainly makes a splash in the energy stakes, I mean there's some modern thrash bands that are a good two decades younger than Overkill who can only hope to achieve the levels of spunk that New Jersey's finest produce here.  That in itself is an achievement, for a band of Overkill's stature and reputation to be able to still sound relevant four decades into their career is no mean feat.  Even in the albums weaker moments it never gets redundant and the energy levels remain high.  There's a real sense of a band in a state of some renewed vigour, helped in no small part by the addition of Jason Bittner on drums.  The former Flotsam & Jetsam skinsman is nothing short of superb throughout "The Wings of War" and seems to have squeezed a little extra out of the rest of his peers.

The album kicks of with a great build to opening track "Last Man Standing" and for the first 4 tracks of the album the Overkill crew stomp, bash and groove their way to a solid level of consistency.  The lead work is of particular note and Blitz sounds as sneery and scathing as ever.  The album is well produced and mixed too with all parts of the thrash machine audible as the five piece hammer away at your skull with the usual blend of chugging riffs and infectious anthems.

There are weak moments as mentioned but they are more a victim of how good the strong tracks are.  In it's own right "Distortion" is a solid enough - if not slightly varied a journey from the last offering - but it just doesn't stand up well against a "Bat Shit Crazy" or a "Head of a Pin".  As the album draws to a close you get the increasing impression that the last few tracks are rescued really by some great solos and stomping skin work which is a shame because trimming of a couple of tracks may have made this less obvious.
